Maintaining Your Diet Regimen During the Holidays
No matter what holidays you celebrate this time of year, the temptation to cheat on your diet regimen is constant. From favorite family recipes that are only prepared this time of year to candy, alcohol, and restricted foods everywhere you look, how do you stick to your diet regimen?
One of the most important methods for managing diet is a tool you can use all year, not just during the holiday season: mindfulness. Mindfulness is a practice in which you slow down, think about what you’re doing and why, and make conscious choices with everything you consume. It can be as simple as getting in the habit of thinking, “What will be the result of me eating this beyond the immediate pleasure?” If it’s something that sets off acid reflux or aggravates your celiac disease, or will make you feel bloated and gassy for the rest of the day, and you think about how that feels, you will find strength to say no or find an alternative.
Know Your Limits
Some people cannot drink a single glass of alcohol or eat a single morsel of chocolate without experiencing pain, but most people are able to withstand small amounts of the things they enjoy. So, allow yourself the small taste. We all experience diminishing returns after the first bite – in other words, the first bite is best, so savor it and enjoy it slowly. Then stop. Allow yourself the small indulgence without heading toward over-consumption that will cause you pain.
Get a Proper Diagnosis
If you’re not sure why you have a negative response to certain foods, find out exactly what it is that is causing the gastrointestinal issue for you. You may find that your diet can have far more variety than you think once you know exactly what you need to avoid to stay health and avoid symptoms.
There is no reason you can’t enjoy the holidays and still follow your dietary requirements. You just need to be mindful of the choices you make. To learn more about how you can manage your diet better, contact Gotham Gastroenterology. We specialize
